be a passenger…

be a passenger…

have you ever been a passenger while someone else is driving and felt like they were out of control?

But then you quickly glance at the speedometer and realize they are going the speed limit?

when you are behind the wheel, you have a different sense of the world around you, everything is in control, you know the car, you know the road and have no earthly idea why your passengers are gripping onto the the roof handle for dear life.

your customers are your passengers.

your goal is to help them have, share and experience the same sensations, emotions and reactions as you.

some call this perspective, or empathy – either way, you can not have it until you trade places with your customer. you will soon realize that their perception of your actions/messages/ideas/vision are either exaggerated or muted, but rarely ever perfectly inline.

this is why branding can seem so ethereal…it is a continual ebb and flow, balancing, adjusting, tweaking with the aim of bringing the passengers world in-line with the drivers.

tension – the language of graphic design

tension – the language of graphic design

ten·sion ‘ten(t)-shen n : a balance maintained in artistic work between opposing styles and elements

the principle of tension (not between YOU and the graphic designer, company or creative agency) in visual communications is critical to effective graphic design. tension is primarily a visual, as well as psychological, attention-getting tactic. for a creative director on an AD campaign as well as the graphic designer and artist – this difficult balance is maintained between opposing formal elements, often causing anxiety, stress, angst, or excitement, exuberance and joy for the viewer.

this is why we generally loathe using stock photography for anything other than story-boarding or proof of concepts. we can have the greatest concept and design execution on an AD, in marketing materials or brand touch points – but if the visual does capture the necessary emotion and achieve an accurate balance – everything falls apart.

designing a great website – step 5

designing a great website – step 5

 create a visual design

for you the client – this is usually the fun part, where you finally get to see layouts for key screens, website navigation ideas, colour palettes, visual effects and ways to integrate media. when you work with a website design company, or creative agency that knows what it is doing – you have a site structure that is based on content, not screen design – which helps ensure that your visual design and user experience meets visitor expectations, communicates clearly (and visually) and is of course easy to use and intuitive for your audience.

this is also the stage where you begin planning how different areas of your website and how content will act on different screens (responsive design) – which helps ensure that visitors have an appropriate and unique experience on each platform, while achieving key strategic objectives (building awareness, selling a product/service, educating, informing).

designing a great website – step 2

designing a great website – step 2

build groundwork

step 1 was about establishing core guidelines as well as laying out some initial assumptions. for a web designer, u/x designer and developer assumptions help map out ideas, but the key to building a great website is actually testing those assumptions.

we all would like to believe that our businesses are truly unique and there are no competitors that could do what we do. 99.99% of the time this is the first assumption that is thrown in to the bin. a critical activity in website design and development is a competitive audit – which means establishing a peer group to baseline against. what is often overlooked is including ideas and benchmarks from other industries who engage with the same target audience.

the reason why most successful companies enlist a creative web design agency is to provide unbiased and objective feedback/evaluation of the existing site and to revisit the goals and objectives.

this is also technology is explored as well as sources of content and resources for ongoing site maintenance.

form – the language of graphic design

form – the language of graphic design

form ‘förm n : the shape and structure of something as distinguished  from its material, or the shape and structure of an object.

basic forms are derived from basic shapes – a square becomes a cube, a circle becomes a sphere, a triangle becomes a pyramid. The terms shape and form are often confused with one another as if they meant the same thing. a form is always composed of multiple surfaces and edges that create an empty space.

the line – language of graphic design

the line – language of graphic design

line ‘lïn  n : the path traced by a moving point, a thin, continuous mark, as that made by a pen, pencil, or brush applied to a surface.

for a graphic designer – a line’s functions are limitless – it can join, organize, divide, direct, construct and move other graphic objects. A line can be read as a positive mark or a negative gap. a line can lead the eye as well as provide movement and energy to any layout/design and when used properly, a line can improve readability and the ultimate meaning of any visual message.

the line is a powerful asset within our tool box as a graphic design agency and we have used it to create striking effects & effective communication pieces.

the point. – language of graphic design

the point. – language of graphic design

point ‘point n : a geometric element that has zero dimensions and a location determinable by an ordered set of coordinates.

a point is the the simplest and purest of all geometric elements in a graphic designer’s vocabulary and used as an essential element in geometry & vector graphics. a point can be realized in many ways – a dot, a shape, form, texture, tone, pattern or in a series to create a line.

a point is the focal point, or centre  of any shape or mass (no matter the size or shape) and on a visual plane is often the anchor for a design to which the eye is naturally affixed.

the “point” is a powerful element in graphic design and is often the base from which meaning and purpose radiate out from in a design.

what your marketing and business can learn from #batkid

yes, this is trying to take advantage of something topical, but I think the lessons that can be learned, and more importantly applied, directly to your business/idea/product/service/campaign – are too valuable to pass up.

besides the obvious & amazing display of the absolute best of society and humanity – there was a deeper level of awe that we can and should reference every day and every time we make any decisions revolving around branding, marketing, sales and customer service.

the story of Miles Scott shows what is possible when people just get the #@$% out of the way of a good idea. nobody argued about the “costs” or the “inconveniences” – all which would have been absolutely minor in comparison to the value of bringing an entire city together.

yes, there are many occasions when you truly can not afford to execute on an idea, but more often than not, it is just an excuse of lazy, uninspired management. this was not the case in San Francisco. we had inspired leadership, community buy in and an idea that anyone and everyone could get behind.

i think we would all like to believe that the reasons for us being in business, working for the companies that we do – are as noble as what was done for Miles Scott and his family.

at the very least, as mentioned, this is something we should strive for with every decision, action and idea that is for our “customers”.
